Activities for Children
Indoor Activities For Excitable Children
Whether you are stuck at home because of bad weather or continue to stay in to avoid a health crisis, the fact remains that kids need to be entertained. Unfortunately, even when the sun is out and the sky is clear, there are only so many outdoor activities you can do in a day. When you’re looking for something fun, entertaining, and educational that doesn’t require sunscreen, it’s going to take a bit of innovation. Here are some mom-approved suggestions.
Get a jump on the school year.
If you have a student starting school this year, they are already at a disadvantage. The 2020/2021 year is a first for all of us, and our teachers, administrators, and students will likely spend the first semester feeling things out. That does not mean that you can’t supplement your child’s education. The best part is that they don’t have to know they are being taught. Kindergarten Kiosk offers plenty of distance learning resources that look more like games than educational materials. Your kids can learn everything from math to science via apps and online games, and they’ll likely retain the information, so they will be better prepared in school.
See the world.
Your computer is more than a screen. It is a window to the world, and even your youngest explorers have a passport to wherever they want to go. Grab the family and gather around the monitor for a quick virtual trip to the aquarium, zoo, or an online concert. When you’re done browsing through the exhibits and watching the penguins play, let the kids dive deeper into global exploration using Google Earth. The kids can go on a virtual Safari, traverse the world’s highest mountains, and even take a gander at unusual buildings, lakes, and other natural and man-made structures from around the globe.
Dance it out.
Have kids that like to move and groove? There are plenty of sing-along and dance-along songs out there. Before you turn up the volume, however, take the time to ensure that what your children are hearing is actually appropriate for little ears. SheKnows suggests several great pieces of music from singers like Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, and Pharrell Williams.
If your kids want to keep the music playing after the dance party is over, make sure they have access to child-friendly headphones, which you can adjust to ensure the safety of their little ears. In addition to cost and comfort, look for headphones that are adjustable and that have the sound quality to let them also watch movies and video games during those hours you need some peace and quiet.
Hands-on activities.
Moving, grooving, and exploring are fantastic, but, sometimes, kids need a few hands-on activities to keep their brains sharp. Fortunately, with a bit of Googling, you can find DIY tutorials on how to make everything from a spaghetti bridge to homemade playdough. Older kids can set off on their own and learn how to draw manga art or build a robot using batteries and an old soda can. Options are almost limitless, and there is a good chance that you have plenty of materials laying around the house right now that can be transformed and repurposed for everyone’s amusement.
Just because you can’t (or do not want to) go outside does not mean the kids are stuck staring at the TV. There are tons of things to do, and your computer or smart device is the tool that can help you find them. Make the most of your indoor time with the suggestions above, and you may never have to hear “Mom, I’m bored...” again.
