Apple Theme Activities
Apples are always one of my favorite topics for the beginnings of the school year. The bounty of apples always gives me warm fall feelings. Did you know that more apples are eaten in America that any other fruit? I’m not surprised. Who doesn’t like the crunch of an apple?
Some great science facts about apples (such as life cycle, parts of an apple, and the difference between popular apple varieties) can be easily incorporated into your literacy and math. I love to start by doing an apple report. It makes a great introduction and a showy portfolio page. I also like to use an apple themed student guided reader that walks students through the experiment in easy reading fashion.
While enjoying the science of apples, the whole curriculum can easily be turned into an apple theme using our Cross-Curricular Thematic Unit of study. In this unit you will find shared reading lessons and activities, scripted lessons for small groups that feature both math and reading lessons, writing activities, and a beautiful real-photo word, vocabulary wall.
Students will also enjoy writing activities, guided readers, art projects, songs and finger plays, and of course plenty of apple science.
This unit is stuffed with 31 apple-themed activities that will fill an entire week or two!
You can easily supplement your apple study with high quality literature that you will find in our suggested book section.
Create a science center for students to enjoy, sing apple songs, create apple crafts, write about apples, eat apples, draw apples, measure apples, weigh apples, yes, even drink apples! Apple-themed learning creates happy, inquisitive, creative learners.
There are so many great videos on youtube. Below is one of my favorite ones that is a field trip to an apple farm.
So head to the apple farm, out to your backyard tree, or your favorite neighborhood store, fill up your shopping cart with apples, and let the fun begin!
