Kindergarten Sight word Decodable Readers

Facebook+Post.png

I just finished reading Dr. Wiley Blevin's newest book A Fresh Look At Phonics. It inspired me to refine my instruction this year. I especially want to make sure that I have all of the elements of phonics instruction in place and that I am avoiding the common pitfalls of instruction that Blevins outlines in his book.

  • Non-existent review and repetition cycle.

  • Lack of application to real reading and writing experiences.

  • Inappropriate reading materials to practice skills.

  • Ineffective use of the gradual release model

  • too much time lost during transitions

One of the areas I focused on right away is in providing my students more sight word decodable books that have a pattern of review and repetition. To help me in this goal, I created two sets of decodable sight word book sets. One set teaches the most common sight words along with decodable text that introduces consonant and vowel sounds in order of their utility.  For the second set, I created a sight word decodable set that follows the sight word and consonant/vowel order progression from the Wonders program (which is the program we use in my district).

By providing students with books to read, color, and take home (or keep in their school book bag for a time) that introduce skills in systematic order. I am hoping to improve my ability to give my students more independent practice and boost the effectiveness of my phonics instruction while avoiding those common pitfalls that Wiley Blevin’s warns about.

It is just as we all know: reading needs to be taught with intention —- strategically, methodically, and intentionally.

You will love these books! They are making such a difference to my young readers!
