Dinosaur Thematic Unit

I absolutely love bringing dinosaurs into the classroom! Because, face it, all kids love dinosaurs! Through thematic teaching, all activities across the curriculum work together to deepen all levels of academic understanding.

Students look at skills-based activities with renewed excitement as now the sight word, or number cards are shaped like dinosaurs!

There are many great supports available for dino-based learning. This disney song is a lot of fun and always a favorite of my students.

And of course the study of dinosaurs would not be complete without Miss Frizzle! She brings excitement and engagement to everything she does!

To set the stage for learning across the curriculum, I purposely design centers that are ready to engage students in all areas of academics Dino-Style!

The Writing Center

The Writing Center is filled with dinosaur writing activities.

The Art Center

The Art Center is filled with dinosaur art samples.

Some of the artist's creations.

Cooperative Art

Working together, students were able to create this collaborative multi-material display.

Dramatic Play

The Student's voted to turn the playhouse into "Jurassic World." Enter to the  "World of Living Dinosaurs!"

The Inside of the playhouse is ready for dinosaur-themed play and discovery. The conversations are exciting to say the least.

The Science Center

The Science Center is Paleontologist Headquarters!

The Science Center is a great place for kids to learn about the science of paleontology through play-based discovery learning.

What kindergartner wouldn't want to dig for dinosaur bones?

Learning Center Activities

These Dinosaur-themed learning centers extend the opportunities to strengthen math and reading skills through active-learning or play-based activities.

Guided Reading

At the guided reading table, students are able to strengthen reading skills while reading theme-based readers.

Book Study and Close Reading and Writing Extention

Close reading is a great activity that allows students to gather facts through text. Look at all of the things we learned from books.

After gathering all the information from our readings and constructing a anchor chart, students write informational stories about dinosaurs.
