Handwriting Intervention Activities

Do you have reluctant writers? There are various reasons that students don’t want to write, but the main reason is that handwriting is a difficult task for them to preform. There is a burning story inside them, but putting that story to paper is, at best, a painful and difficult task.

Teaching a child to have confidence in writing is one of the most important things a teacher and/or parent can do. It is through writing that a child is able to communicate, self-express, impart knowledge, and reflect. Writers that find it difficult to communicate on paper quickly become stressed, frustrated, anxious, and embarrassed.

We need to help those students strengthen their hands, tune up their lines and curves, and increase motor development. There is only one way to do it — through hard work! These children are basically starting from scratch. It is never too late to fix a problem, but it is not easy. These students need to create new muscle memory, muscle strength, dexterity of muscles, and feel that inner drive when one is becoming better at a skill.

These worksheets were designed with my grandson T in mind. He is so smart and filled with countless stories inside of him. However, his handwritten stories are quickly discounted because they are very difficult for adults to read. He is frustrated, he wants to improve, but he needs more. Hopefully a handwriting trip through space will be the start of new confidence for my little reluctant handwriter and yours too!
