Spider Book Study
Book studies are a great way to allow students the opportunity to authentically experience Core Standards using both informational and literature texts.
Developing deep connections with text allows students opportunity to explore and extend learning; to really see what information can be gained from a book. Then, to take the content of the story a step further and make connections between text and their own lives — to make sense of experiences — to broaden thinking and knowledge, awakens excitement for learning and sparks desire to learn content.
As teachers provide opportunities to deeply study stories, students are presented with a wide range of stimulating ideas that build up understanding for the world around them. That experience and knowledge transfers to not only other books to be read in their future, but to academic learning in all content areas.
Responding to books — as is the core of our book studies, promotes growth in all language areas — reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are also allowed opportunity to respond to text in creative ways, using different mediums. These methods of self-expression are skills that are needed across the curriculum and in everyday life.
Important reading strategies can be taught using these studies. What does it really mean to Visualize and record that visualization? What exactly is the difference between fiction and non-fiction text? What is the best way to retell a story? What are the elements of the story? What are the traits of the character?…….. Just to name a few important strategies that are build using this growing bundle of book studies.
